Tsunami alert shuts beaches

Strange days indeed.  On the back of the earlier post (on BlueBeyond.com.au) about the earthquake and tsunami hitting the Solomon Islands comes word that the NSW coastline has been closed, and Sydney Harbour is taking precautionary actions on the chance of a tsunami hitting us, sometime after 11.30am.  Thats about now.

All beaches in NSW and Queensland have been closed and the Manly ferry service in Sydney has been suspended because of a tsunami alert following a major earthquake in the Solomon Islands.

Meanwhile, it sounds like widespread destruction in Gizo and Munda, both popular diving destinations.  I hope the local communities there, including the diving community (already economically challenged since the security issues in the Solomons) are able to rebuild quickly.
