The 4 Stages of Global Warming Denial

Treehugger: The 4 Stages of Global Warming Denial Great post over at Treehugger about the cycle of denial we’re going through. Read the whole post, but the stages are:

1. Global Warming doesn’t exist. It’s not happening.

2. Okay, it’s happening, but humans are not causing it.

3. Okay, humans are causing it, but there’s nothing we can do about it, we can’t go back to the stone age, it would ruin our economy, it’s worse to act than not to act, etc.

4. Okay, it is possible with technology, efficiency/conservation and smart planning to do something about it, but it’s going to hurt the bottom line of “dirty” corporations.

Kind of reminds of a Yes Prime Minister episode where the public servants were briefing about the four stages of diplomatic intervention in the event that one country might invade another

  • Deny its going to happen
  • Admit it might happen but emphasise there’s nothing that we should do about it
  • Admit that maybe we should do something, but claim there’s nothing we can do
  • Admit that maybe there was something we could have done, but it’s too late now………

The sad thing is that there are parallels between these too, and I worry that number four on the YPM list is the way we’re heading……

I think there are enough people who understand global warming is a problem that if we just work together we’ll be able to shift things enough that the mainstream itself will move on the issue as well.

It just seems we need to find effective ways to make public changes that show undoing global warming is possible, and it is happening in a day to day way with real people making different decisions about how they live their life.

Undo global warming by making one change.
