Cook’s Endeavour - found?

According to an article on SMH.com.au, researchers from the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project have found a number of British shipwrecks off Newport, Rhode Island, that may include the HMS Endeavour, the ship that Captain James Cook discovered Australia on.

A total of six ships have been discovered in and around Newport Harbour, where it is believed they were sunk by the British in order to prevent easy access by French forces who may have tried to assist in the American independence effort.

Although the Endeavour (renamed as the Lord Sandwich) is likely to be among the ships found (there is a 6 in 13 chance that she is), it will take years before an identification might be made.

The discovery of the latest 4 ships is on the back of intense historical research and ocean searching.  Ballast piles, parts of the keels, a canon, an anchor and even some crockery are among the wreckage found to date.
