Sen. Andrew Bartlett speaks on the environment

The good guy of Australian politics (and as far as I know the only Aussie pollie that is blogging), Sen. Andrew Bartlett, has blogged about some environmental issues currently on his radar screen..

Firstly, about environmental hotspots and the extinction of species.  Some chilling thoughts:

I met with visiting British Professor Norman Myers. He was featured on ABC radio last week, where he argues that “we are well into the opening phase of a mass extinction of species. There are about 10 million species on earth. If we carry on as we are, we could lose half of all those10 million species.”

Secondly about the impact of deep sea trawling.

It is probable that there are a number of rare or endemic species in some of these locations, and the risk is being run of destroying something before we even know it’s there.

I encourage readers to read (and subscribe) to Andrew’s blog and this post, and to think through the issues presented.  In short, we’re killing our planet, and even worse, we are completely ignorant of some of the species we are killing.
