Japan’s whaling fleet sets sail

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Japan’s whaling fleet sets sail

Japan’s whaling fleet has set sail for Antarctic waters where it will make its biggest catch in 20 years.

The boats will aim to catch nearly 1,000 whales over the coming months.

A global moratorium on commercial whaling has been in place since the 1980s, but Japan describes its programme as “scientific.”

Thanks to Kevin for this link.

A big call out to Japan to stop this crap Who needs 1,000 whales for scientific reasons.

I’ve lived in Japan, and have a deep connection to Japan through my martial arts training I know that whale meat was once a part of the cuisine of some traditional communities. As I understand it, whales were hunted and caught by groups of men in small canoes, and 1 whale was captured and taken back to a community for a feast

This type of hunting was very different than the modern fleets that change the balance of power to be decidedly anti-whale.

The international community needs to put pressure on Japan (and Norway and all other countries) to limit scientific whaling to a set and small limit, and only where specific programs can be justified. 5-10 of these animals, per country per year, is more than enough.

These magnificent creatures of the ocean need to be protected and preserved.
